I tried. I really did. I watched about half a hour of the movie. I sat there, and all I could think was "This guy is a Jerk." Really, the hero of the film just starts off as this complete jerk, uninterested in life, fascinated with a fantasy figure, dumps two girls JUST PERFECT FOR HIM at the start of the movie... and ... well... I just couldn't STAND the film after the prelude to the first fight.
I mean, just... the little video game motifs of the film are trying to distract you really hard from the fact that the dude is a loser, and that we are suppose to be giving a shit about the twit. I mean, it's not like we have Daniel from Karate Kid here, who is genuinely likable. This kid is just a jerk. He is a misfit in a band that refuses to accept love, and doesn't accept love when it's right there IN THE FREAKING ROOM with him. What the hell is wrong with him? He's hooked up, and he doesn't care, because he wants to chase after the illusion of a perfect person, and what follows is a mental insanity plea as he persues an imaginary love life.
It pains me to say this, but as bad as 2012 gets, it's STILL a better film than this mockery. How they got so many critics to actually love this film is beyond me.
