I was reading the Ferret just a few moments ago, and he was complaining at how easy games have gotten, and how the storytelling function was "You are more than Human". I see his point, even though I am not sure I need to go directly back to some old fashioned games. I think a space between would be nice.

None the less, it got me thinking about shooters. I played a lot of earlier ones, and a few of the later ones. Although I hate it now, I really respect the Doom series, for giving me my chance to kill lots of monsters. I really did like Doom 3. I hated a lot of the spy and modern day ones, and the recent Call of Duties (Which I have played once) makes me claw out my eyes trying to figure out who is on my side. I just want to shoot them all, and let the commanders sort it out later. If I could live long enough past the snipers. However, the effort to make you look like a badass in all these games is pretty much the goal and they work out well for what they are.

The best shooter, though, the one that I come back to keep playing, still, is Tron 2.0 (Killer Ap). You still have all the "Bad Ass Armory", and you pick it up as you go along, but your charcater is not a bad ass. He's a kid. Lost, with one friend, and he screws up. A Lot.

You will die on the Game Grid racing cycles. You will fall off platforms that you are not aware disappear. You will not know where the floor is, since the floor is the same color as space. That big wall of Red? Yeah, that's the world being deleted, don't go in that. This 'Princess' that you are trying to save, the one that can get you back to your father? Oops, you turn that into a monster trying to kill you.

Your character bumbles his way through the game, solving puzzles, and getting the hang of things just in time to screw something else up, and the game is very enjoyable, not because it's any harder or easier than other shooters, but because your character is a doophus with a heart of gold. That, and the world is *really* pretty.

I can understanding wanting a challenging game where you have to build up to be better than others, and that doesn't reward you straight away with the feeling of "I am a God". I can understand wanting to play that level of game. I don't think I always want to do that, but when I do, I think Tron 2.0 fits that bill.
