I didn't realize this... but apparently people consider Ramses from the 10 Commandments (or, if you're more traditional, the Exodus of the Holy Bible) as a villain. To which I had to do a double take.

You see, I can't think of Ramses as a villain. He isn't a horribly nice person, mind you, but he wasn't really evil. He's just a King who ruled the best way he knew how, in a fashion his ancestors did. Sure, he's a monument builder, but is that really evil?

Moses comes around, and causes all kinds of problems, and insists on upsetting the status quo, and it is only on the good grace that Moses is Ramses brother that he doesn't do horrible things to him, like any good king should when a crackpot comes into town. Even in the end, when things have fallen apart and Ramses takes his chariots to kill Moses and the fleeing Jews, do you have to wonder if Ramses isn't somewhat correct in his motivation in taking revenge against the brother who killed his son.

I mean, leaving the whole "women are evil things" out of it, I really felt sorry for Ramses. While an adversary for Moses, and ruler or a mighty empire for the day (one which people probably did hate, although not for any reason presented), I just don't see him as evil.
