Shan Yu Forgettable?

If people didn't know, Mulan tends to be my second most favorite Disney Movie. I love the music, I love the direct, and I just love the whole thing. The one thing that boggles my mind, though, is that the Nastolgia Critic, who has been pretty good at evaluating art assets in the Disney Movies is just so wrong about Shan Yu.
The Character Design for Shan Yu was brilliant. He's got that Hun look. He's big. He's Broad, and he looks like his totem. He *IS* a hawk, from his eyes and face design, to the way he manages to hunt and power down people.
Furthermore, you can argue that Shan Yu plays the Pheonix Role in the classic Dragon/Pheonix-Yin/Yang conflict. He is everything that a strong man should be. He's quick. He's strong. He's agressive. He's Instinctual. He misses a few beats, but he is a strong representation, in comparision to Mulan, who is Dragon Like. She is Agile, she is intelligent. She cares about the people.
I understand a lot of the things that might be being missed about the Shan Yu/Fu Mulan conflict is tied directly to Chinese Myth, and if you don't have a layman's understanding, you can miss a lot of things.
I think the art direction is more brilliant than is really understood, that Shan Yu's design was really brilliant, and the fact that Jackie Chan sings in the Chinese Version of Mulan just help make this a really favorite move.
