Really, it wouldn't scare me that much if it wasn't cultural changing of basic human nature.
He and his friends will say LoL (la-oo-wl) instead of, you know, actually laughing. It's like part of their humanity isn't there, and it disturbs me greatly and hurts my heart in ways that is hard to understand for me. It shouldn't matter on one level, but on another level, it is horrific.

Date: 2012-03-25 02:54 pm (UTC)Here's why I think this;
Boys at the younger end of puberty are pretty obsessed with the idea of being cool dudes. Among other things because their bodies are changing, their minds are changing, and they know really well that whatever they actually are, cool dudes aren't it. The coolest junior high student who has ever lived is still stuck in junior high (or high school if you're from a more rural area that can't afford the separate functions). So if you're that age and you say LOL rather than actually laughing, you've acknowledged that something's actually funny or that you should acknowledge it as funny, without having to laugh uproariously. It also is a tidy fit for all those situations when something is kinda sort of funny, but nawww, not funny enough to actually laugh at.
