Maybe I just don't care anymore...
Jul. 12th, 2012 10:39 pmI might just be numb to what people call Fear Mongering.
I mean, let's face it. Guns don't really scare me. Nukes don't scare me anymore. I'm not frightened by the Grey Goo Scenario. Drones, hackers, all sorts of things don't scare me. I'm respectful of all the above, mind you, but ... it's not the tools or the items that scare me in themselves, it's the people behind them, and for the most part, even then...
It's not that I don't get afraid. I do, trust me! I just don't think that you can set a tenor of discussion have me take it as serious fear riding stuff. The "War on Terror" kinda killed that part of me. I do not fear what was being discussed in a recent TED talk, because I was aware and understood all the things covered, and had known about them for YEARS. It was not new news to me in the slightest.
Yet, people are all screaming "Fear Monger", and I'm going "No. He's educating you on what you should already know. None of what he is talking about is new. Taking security into your own hands is something you should have been doing long ago". While I myself am not really the epitome of defense, I am *aware* of the ways I can die. I also am aware that tools are only as good as the people who use them, and I am not skilled in the weapons being used now. Outside of maybe information, but really, that is hardly a skill at all now days. Googlefu is stronger than ever.
Also, you can't fear a people that are never named. Oh, sure a few examples were given. The Mexican Mafia, a terrorist plot in India, some lone hacker somewhere... but these aren't really "Threats" and they in general are not targets to be feared, but examples that you learn from. If all the sudden you were afraid of what the Mexican Mafia might do if you watched this video, you probably should have been afraid long before you had seen this video.
I will fear that which takes interest in me, if I deem it necessary to fear. I will not fear shadows of things that may or may not come, and may or may not actually be things to fear. If you want to make it a point of fear the possibilities of the talks, that is fine. I take it as a point of education that is useful to be heard.
